FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – News13 has continued to ask Florence School District One officials for more information on the resignations, administrative leave, and firing of five West Florence High School employees.

Softball coach Kevin Jones, basketball coach Pete Ellis, and long-time principal Pam Quick, have all resigned in the past month.

According to the school district, football coach Trey Woodberry stepped down from his position as athletic director, and is now on paid administrative leave.

Volleyball coach, Hilary Pratt, told News13 she was fired, and was sent a separation letter by interim principal Dr. Kelvin Wymbs.

Dr. Wymbs became interim principal of West Florence High School after Quick resigned.

Parent of two West Florence High School students, Renee Graham, said she wants to know why so many employees have left the school.

“A lot of us in the community feel as though Florence School District One is trying to cover something up,” she said. “For the simple fact, they know that there’s the Freedom of Information Act the media can get their hands on. So the only thing they’re releasing is basically like a tardy form,” she continued. “It’s a fill-in-the-blank with very general information. Nothing to give you any real answers.”

News13 obtained Quick’s resignation letter through a Freedom of Information Act request on Monday.

The form had blank spaces for Quick’s name and the date. She listed ‘personal reasons’ as her reason to resign.

Graham said the district is not communicating well with parents on what’s going on inside the school.

“Why are all these athletic coaches, all the sudden, resigning? It makes no sense to the community,” said Graham. “A lot of the community is questioning why more answers aren’t being given.”

The mother of two said the parents at West Florence have a right to know why there have been multiple resignations in such a short amount of time.

“I think it’s a lack of communication,” she said. “I think there’s very little, if none. Is there something going on within the athletic department that parents should have been made aware of? Especially with their children being student athletes.”

Interim Superintendent, Dr. Dan Strickland, released a statement addressing the concerns related to West Florence High School on Monday.

Dr. Strickland said the district supports the decisions Dr. Wymbs’ has made regarding West Florence High School.

“The district’s not answering anybody’s questions,” said Graham. “I understand the district put out a letter to try and ease parents, but that was more of a sugarcoat letter instead of actually giving the parents answers as to why all of the sudden this is happening.”

News13 has repeatedly asked Florence District One officials for a deeper explanation into the multiple resignations, but the district said it cannot comment on personnel matters.
