West Florence High football coach resigns from coaching position

FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – West Florence High School football coach Trey Woodberry has resigned from his coaching duties, according to district officials.

Florence School District One Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Matrell E. Sturkey says Woodberry “resigned from his football coaching responsibilities and is continuing as a teacher in the district.”

The district did not confirm a date that Woodberry quit from the coaching position, but on March 20 officials said Woodberry had been placed on administrative leave with pay, but did not comment on why the leave was initiated.

In recent weeks, long-time West Florence High School principal Pam Quick resigned for “personal reasons.” In a fill-in-the-blank style resignation letter, Quick documents her last day at the school as Feb. 23.

Dr. Kelvin Wymbs was appointed as acting principal of West Florence High School.

The district responded generally to “various issues” at West Florence High School in an email earlier this month.

“While the District cannot disclose confidential information regarding its students or staff members, we are in the process of responding to multiple requests from the media regarding these matters and we will respond consistent with the law,” the district said in a press release.

“We wish to be clear that we fully support the efforts [acting principal] Dr. [Kelvin] Wymbs has made and continues to make on behalf of West Florence High School to ensure its compliance with District policies and procedures,” the district said. “To the extent Dr. Wymbs has identified any issues that needed to be addressed, he has addressed them appropriately.”
