FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – A fifth person has announced his campaign for Florence County Sheriff.

Darrin Yarborough said in a press release that he will launch his campaign for the 2020 election on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Bazen’s Family Restaurant, located at 704 South Irby Street, in Florence. He will run as a Democratic candidate.

Yarborough is a major with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, the release said. He began his career in law enforcement in 1993 as a correctional officer at the Florence City-County Complex. He has also worked for the Florence Police Department, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, and the Florence County Detention Center.

“I am running because Florence County needs a sheriff who puts the needs of citizens first and will work to create safer communities and build stronger ties,” Yarborough said in the release. “For the past three decades, I have dedicated my life to law enforcement and building strong bonds with community members. I’m ready to take that experience to the sheriff’s office and put all residents of Florence County first.”

In March, Frizell Moore announced his run for Florence County Sheriff in a Facebook post. He also announced his campaign manager as Yamekia Robinson.

Thomas B. “TJ” Joye, Jr. filed for his candidacy in December. Joye has 30 years of law enforcement  experience and was the lieutenant executive officer over Troop 5 of the South Carolina Highway Patrol before he retired.

Joye is running as a Republican.

Jody Lynch has also announced she will run for sheriff again. She lost the election in 2018 to current Sheriff Kenney Boone. She is running as a Democrat.

Lynch made her announcement via Facebook in January.

David Alford, the Director of the Florence County Voter Registration and Election Office, told News13 in March that no one had officially filed the paperwork to run for sheriff because the filing period doesn’t open until next March.

Boone will run for re-election in 2020, according to the SC State Ethics Commission website.
