CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – On Monday night, the Horry County School Board and school safety and security staff met in a closed-door meeting. The agenda said “Discussion of School Security” and Coordinator of School Safety and Security at Horry County Schools, David Beaty, was included.
School Board Chairman, Joe DeFeo, said they met to talk about current safety procedures and recommendations since the shooting in Parkland, Florida.
This comes the same day as a Myrtle Beach Middle School student was removed from school after claiming he had a gun.
When asked if the district has seen more threats or if staff are being more cautious, DeFeo said they’ve definitely seen more.
“The threats that have come recently have been in some cases just ridiculous,” said DeFeo. “It’s been students standing up in the middle of class and making a comment. I mean, this is stuff they didn’t do before. And the students are being removed, they’re being disciplined and the police are being called.”
DeFeo couldn’t say much about the meeting but did say changes could be announced in the future.
