ARLINGTON, Texas – Jaylen Shaw led five Coastal Carolina players in double digits with 18 points, but it was not enough in a hard-fought 87-80 loss at Texas Arlington.
The loss stopped CCU’s four-game winning streak.
Zac Cuthbertson picked up his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. He also had three steals.
Demario Beck did his usual thing, scoring 13 points on five-of-seven shooting. He also had seven rebounds.
Freshman Tre Brown was coming off a nine-point effort in the win over Texas State, and did not slow down against UTA, scoring a career-high 12 points. Artur Labinowicz was the fifth double-digit scorer finishing with 10 points.
Shaw continued to show his all-around game, finishing with five points, five assists and a steal.
CCU (11-14, 5-7 Sun Belt) shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field and hit nine of their 29 three point attempts (31%). CCU also did a solid job at the free throw line hitting 17 of 19 (89.5%).
The free throw line was one of the differences in the game as UTA (15-10, 6-6 Sun Belt) was able to shoot 19 more free throws, Hitting 22 of its 33 attempts.
UTA had two 20-point scorers as Johnny Hamilton and Davion Turner finished with 20. Hamilton also had a double-double with 13 rebounds.
Kevin Hervey was held seven points below his average, finishing with 15 points. Nathan Hawkins scored 11 points and added six assists.
UTA shot 45.8 percent from the field (27-59), hit 11 of its 27 three point field goals for 40.7% and finished hitting 66.7 percent from the free throws.
CCU out rebounded UTA 38-36 and out-scored the Mavericks 34-24 in the paint. CCU continues to have a strong bench play, outscoring UTA 34-24.
CCU took a 39-38 lead into the locker room at halftime after a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes with saw six ties and eight lead changes.
CCU shot 42 percent from the field and Labinowicz and Brown led the Chants offense with 10 points each.
Hamilton and Turner had 13 points each to lead the home-standing Mavericks who finished the half shooting 40 percent from the field.
CCU will be off this Thursday, but will be back home for three consecutive games beginning with a game Saturday, Feb. 10 against Appalachian State. Gametime is 3:30 p.m. at the HTC Center.
