CONWAY – Coastal Carolina hit three home runs, including a three-run shot in the ninth, but it was not enough as Maryland claimed a 7-6 victory Saturday afternoon in day two of the Johnny Gardner Law Group Tournament at Springs Brooks Stadium.

Down four runs in the ninth. Coastal’s Cory Wood walked and Kieton Rivers was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Next, Seth Lancaster, who was 3-for-4 with three RBI, hit a three-run home run just to the left of the 20-foot batter’s eye in centerfield to cut the CCU deficit to one, 7-6. Two batters later, Lee Sponseller was hit by a pitch. The game ended when Kyle Skeels struck out and pinch runner Turner Buis, who was attempting to steal second, was called out as Skeels was ruled to have interfered with the throw to second.

While Coastal drops to 9-3 for the season, all three Chanticleer losses has been by one run and, in two of the three losses, the Chants has hit three home runs. Maryland improves to 6-4. The Johnny Gardner Law Group Tournament concludes Sunday with Ball State facing Maryland at 11 am with Coastal and Radford set to follow at approximately 3 pm (or one hour after the conclusion of game one).

Maryland wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. With two outs, Taylor Wright walked and Marty Costes was hit by a pitch to set up an RBIU single by Kevin Biondic.

The Terrapins added two runs in the second inning. Randy Bednar and Ty Friedrich started the frame with walks. After an error loaded the bases with two outs, Wright singled up the middle to bring home both Bednar and Friedrich.

In the fourth, Coastal cut its deficit to two, 3-1, when Kevin Woodall Jr., hit a leadoff home run over the 20-foot centerfield wall. He is the fifth player in four-year history of Springs Brooks Stadium (fourth Chanticleer) to clear the batter’s eye. He is the first player since April 24, 2016 to accomplish the feat.

Maryland got that run back and one more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Biondic doubled, A.J. Lee singled and Randy Bednar doubled to drive in Biondic. Friedrich followed with a sacrifice fly.

Coastal answered in the home half of the fifth as Parker Chavers left the confines of Springs Brooks Stadium for his first career home run.

However, the Terps once again responded as Dunn hit a solo home run to give his quad a 6-2 advantage.

Coastal cut its deficit in half, 6-3, in the seventh. Lancaster doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Undaunted, Maryland bounced back with a solo home run by pinch hitter Will Webster in the eighth, which prove to be the winning run.

Zach Hopeck (0-2) was saddled with the loss. He allowed four hits and four runs (two earned) with four walks and five strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Tyler Blohm (1-1) got the win for the Terrapins. He allowed five hits and two runs in six innings with seven strikeouts. Biondic moved from first base to the mound for the ninth and got his first save despite allowing the three-run home run to Lancaster.
