ROWLAND AREA, NC (WBTW) – New affordable housing will soon be available for Rowland Elders of the Lumbee Tribe.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Tribal Administrator Doctor Freda Porter said. “It just feels tremendous. We are ecstatic about finally getting this.”
The project is thanks in part to a Community Development Block Grant awarded to the tribe and county. It’s worth $750,000.
The money will go toward a new development just outside of Rowland with 24 single family homes that will be rented to Elders for an affordable price.
The county and tribe worked collaboratively to receive the grant.
“It’s a great thing we are working together,” District Three Commissioner Roger Oxendine said. “Hopefully this will open a door for us to work in other communities to be able to collaborate together and be able to get more affordable housing.”
The development will also feature a community building.
County and tribe leaders agreed the project is important and has been a long time coming.
The tribe hopes Elders will be able to move in by summer 2021.
