Army Staff Sgt. James Hurst has served around the world including Iraq, Korea and Germany.
He’s been awarded two purple hearts and three army achievement medals.
The Military Warriors Support Foundation honored him Wednesday morning as one of their true heroes.
The group helps wounded veterans transition back to civilian life.
Hurst says his job in the military consisted of raids on houses, convoys and much more.
According to the founder and CEO of Military Warriors Support Foundation Leroy Sisco, the program gave away 652 homes in 43 different states since it started.
“We have 1,237 adults and 1,022 children in beautiful homes today,” says Sisco.
Hurst, his wife Alvia and 16 year-old son can now continue the healing process in their new home and the best part about it is they didn’t have to pay a dime.
“It means the world to us. It’s a place I could actually call home,” said Hurst.
He says upon retiring, his visit to South Carolina urged him to come back.
The family has a new house in Florence to call their own.
“The night we got here I wanted to drive by the house, even though it was late. We had just got off the plane from Phoenix and we had to see the house.”
Hurst and Alvia will be officially moving into their new home the first week in June.
The Military Warriors Support Foundation will be giving away their next home in Atlanta on Thursday with country singer and native Darius Rucker.
