LONGS, SC (WBTW) Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s have teamed up to host National Women Build Week. The program encourages women across the country to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing with Habitat in their local communities.
Donna King had always wanted to help out with Habitat but didn’t find the time until she retired and moved to Myrtle Beach. After spending time at Lowe’s in a power tools class she decided to continue her skills working on the Habitat home in Longs.
“I came in thinking I’ll do whatever,” King said. “They are very good, hands on especially during women’s week. They want to make sure that we all play a part. They let us try anything.”
The women learn new skills all while helping for a good cause. It’s all part of the multiple benefits of their hard day’s work.
“I feel like oh my gosh I accomplished something. I can do that. It was a great experience,” King said.
“They feel like they are not ready to do a lot of the labor part of it,” Derek Owsinski, site supervisor said. “By the time they leave they realize they can do it and more capable more so than they thought.”
