A Lumberton woman was shot and killed early Friday morning while she was asleep in her home, authorities say.

The incident happened around 3:25 a.m. when an unknown suspect shot into the house at 110 Front Street in Lumberton, said Captain Terry W. Parker of Lumberton Police.

Mrs. Mary Thompson, age 56, was struck by gunfire while sleeping. Her husband was in the house when the shooting happened, but was not hit, the man told News13 Friday afternoon.

Thompson died from her injuries at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

There is no suspect information at this time, Parker said.

Police are asking for any tips or information about the incident.
