RALEIGH, NC – A Morrisville woman pleaded guilty to two felonies Thursday after being charged in a traffic collision on I-440 in Raleigh that injured two NCDOT employees.
Angela Roland Bathea, 44, pleaded guilty to two felony offenses of failure to move over resulting in serious injury, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said.
Bathea was sentenced to a minimum of 14 months and a maximum of 26 months imprisonment. She will be on probation for 18 months following her release.
The accident happened at 1:22 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. Bathea “made statements to the fact she had drank 4-5 beers and her last drink was around 5:30 a.m. that day,” according to warrants.
Police said Bathea’s Toyota car slammed into a DOT truck on the shoulder of I-440 East near the Capital Boulevard interchange.
The warrants said she never tried to stop or avoid the collision before hitting the workers.
She also said she took a sedative and anti-tremor medication early in the morning of the crash.
When she appeared in court May 17, she said in a low voice, “I am truly sorry.”
Darrick Bridges, 44, was struck and pinned between the car and a DOT truck, Raleigh Police said. Kelly Lewis, 46, was struck by the car and knocked over a highway guardrail, police said.
Both of Bridges’ legs had to be amputated.
