PUNTA GORDA, FL – A woman was accidentally shot and killed Tuesday during a Citizen Police Academy scenario, the Punta Gorda Police Department reports.
The woman, identified as Mary Knowlton, was one of 35 people participating in the two-hour Punta Gorda Citizen Police Academy. Knowlton was one of two participants randomly selected to be put through a “shoot/don’t shoot” scenario in which they make decisions on using simulated lethal force in a live role play.
Police said “Knowlton was struck with a live round.” She was pronounced dead at Lee Memorial Hospital.
Officials declined to comment on why live ammunition was being used. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
The police officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
“I am devastated for everyone involved in this unimaginable event,” Police Chief Tom Lewis said. “If you pray, please pray for Mary’s family, and for the officers who were involved. Everyone involved in this accident is in a state of overwhelming shock and grief.”
The department said it “must take great care not to jeopardize the investigation.”
“The Punta Gorda Police Department realizes the community has many questions about this incident,” police said. “As the investigation continues and more information is available, we will release it.
