MIAMI — A South Florida woman is hospitalized in a coma after she was allegedly attacked by a roommate she recently found on Craigslist.
Court records show 35-year-old Byron Mitchell has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly attacking 23-year-old Danielle Jones on February 14, 2016. Mitchell has entered a written not guilty plea.
According to a Miami police report, Mitchell claims it was self-defense and that Jones came at him with a knife. Jones suffered numerous slashes and bruises during the Valentine’s Day attack, which was also her birthday.
NBC Miami says Jones was working and living in downtown Miami when she found the roommate on Craigslist two weeks ago. Family and friends describe her as “young, vibrant and independent.”
Jones’ family has launched a GoFundMe page titled “Justice for Dani” to raise money for her medical and other expenses. The page reads that she was “bludgeoned, strangled and face mutilated in an attempted murder by a man she had accepted as a roommate after she placed an add on Craigslist.” The Associated Press contributed to this report.
