CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – A woman accused of kidnapping her infant daughter from South Carolina and fleeing overseas more than 20 years ago is appearing in federal court to enter a plea and be sentenced.
Dorothy Lee Barnett, formerly of the Isle of Palms, is charged with parental kidnapping and falsifying U.S. passport applications. She could be sentenced to 30 years.
Court documents say Barnett is scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel in Charleston on Tuesday for a plea and sentencing hearing.
Prosecutors say Barnett did not have custody when she took her daughter, who was almost a year old, from South Carolina in 1994.
Barnett was located in Australia in 2013 living under several aliases. She fought extradition but was returned to the United States last September.
