SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office say they arrested one woman for child endangerment and failure to stop for a blue light after a slow-speed chase Wednesday afternoon.
The incident report identifies the suspect as 34-year-old Sherry Nicole Williams of Wedgefield, South Carolina.
Ken Bell with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says an officer was called out to Ridgehill Road about an individual parked in the driveway and refusing to leave. When the deputy approached the car, they found a woman sitting in the drivers seat with a small child in the rear seat and an infant standing on the passenger seat.
The woman told the officer that she was waiting on someone and the deputy advised her that she would have to leave but she would also have to call someone to bring a car seat for the baby, who was unrestrained. At that time, she put the car in drive and drove away.
The officer caught up to her and attempted to pull her over, but she continued to drive away at a slow pace. At one point, the suspect entered a dead end and with the officer behind her car, turned around in the road, and attempted to run her car into the patrol car.
The report says that eventually, the driver made her way to Main Street where she purposely ran her car into a marked county patrol vehicle with an officer inside.
When the woman finally stopped, she was taken into custody and the children were given to the Department of Social Services. Speeds in the chase never exceeded 30 mph and there were no injuries, Bell says.
Williams is currently being held at the Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center under a $2,000 bond.
