MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) – Two stolen prescription pill bottles from a retirement community in Mount Pleasant led police into a case of stolen identity where a they say a woman pretended to be a nurse.
Karen Stone turned herself in to Mount Pleasant Police Department Monday morning. The 29-year-old is charged with unlawful practice of medicine. She was released on a $30,000 bond.
Detectives determined that she used a another person’s social security number, name and nursing license to dupe staff at Somerby of Mount Pleasant, a retirement community.
Back in December, staff at Somerby discovered someone had stolen two bottles of Ritalin intended for a resident. Upon further investigation authorities found out it was Stone, who they say has a “extensive history” stealing drugs using fraud and deceit.
Somerby of Mount Pleasant has not answered News 2’s questions regarding how long Stone was employed at the retirement community or what her actual title was and deferred all questions to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
In a statement, Somerby of Mount Pleasant wrote.
“Our senior living community takes very seriously our responsibility to our residents. It is our company policy to take all reasonable and necessary measures to protect their lives, their property and their safety. In keeping with that policy, when staff at the community discovered the medication was missing we notified the police, at which time this became a police investigation. We cannot comment on an ongoing police investigation.”
