FLORENCE – Wilson High School hopes to re-establish itself as a power program in football, and the Tigers believe Thomas Balkcom is the guy to do it.
Wilson introduced Balkcom as its new head coach Friday. He replaces Chad Eaddy who stepped down in November after four years with the team. Balkcom played on Georgia Tech’s national title team in 1990. Wilson will be his third stop as a high school head coach, and he says it’s the perfect fit for his family.
“It feels surreal. I mean, it’s wonderful,” he said Friday. “You have all the hard work that you go through and the dreams that you want to accomplish of being a head coach, and then when it finally happens, it’s just surreal, and I’m just excited about being here at Wilson High School. And I’m grateful.”
Balkcom was offered the job at Lake City two years ago, but said it wasn’t the right time for his family. But he says he loves the Pee Dee area, so he was thrilled to have the opportunity at Wilson.
