FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Home surveillance footage shows a possible suspect to car break-ins in the Wedgewood neighborhood of West Florence.
Over the past few weeks, the Wedgewood community has been the target of car break ins. Stolen items from each car include handguns, purses, and wallets.
The Wedgewood neighborhood has reported nine car break in’s over a ten day period.
Homeowner Conrad West said, this is not the first time they’ve had this problem.
“My automobile was broken into in 2007,” Said West. “They took out golf clubs and several other items. It happened at night. I did not realize until the following morning.”
Other Wedgewood residents lost tools and electronics. After the crime wave, the community board put up ‘No Soliciting’ and ‘crime watch’ signs, each car received car Wedgewood decals and a neighborhood watch was created.
“We had a committee, a neighborhood watch. We met and talked about what we wanted to do.”
Florence County Sheriff’s, Major Michael Nunn encourages the crime watch programs.
“Citizen Involvement is key in these thing, we encourage citizens to participate in crime watch organizations. We sponsor crime watch organizations that are certified through our agency,” said Major Nunn.
The Sherif’s department plans to increase patrols in West Florence as a preventative measure.
Major Nunn explains, “The citizens in a particular area are our eyes and ears. If they see something… contact us!”
Members of the Wedgewood community will have a meeting with the sheriff and fire department next week to discuss neighborhood safety.
Tips from Major Nunn:
-Remember to lock your car doors
-Avoid leaving for firearms in cars
-Avoid leaving wallet, purses or personal information in cars
-Park cars in a garage if you can
