COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – With temperatures barely above freezing while rain fell all day, folks in Columbia looked for different ways to get or stay warm and keep their minds off the winter weather. Brittany Sanders met some friends at Krispy Kreme, where the “Hot Now” light was a beacon for those looking for anything hot.

“It’s freezing outside, and once you get out of the car all that freezing rain hits your face,” she said. “I got a coffee. I don’t normally do that unless I’m at home in the morning when I wake up.”

Others filed in to warm up or fuel up. Brittany said, “Oh, it made me feel better, yeah. I’m all warm inside now.”

Across town, Breighlyn Johnson was working at Beaches Tanning Salon, where several people said they came in because they wanted to feel like they were somewhere warm and sunny. Besides working there, she gets in the tanning beds about once a week. The warmth and light help her physically and mentally, she says.

“Oh, I’m laying on the beach somewhere with a book in my hand. I think I am, but I’m actually just like going to sleep,” she said, chuckling. “Just trying to get comfortable and get warm and then walking back out in the awful, wet rain and going home and getting in my bed to get warm.”
