GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) – The mayor of a small South Carolina city wants to replace the plaques on a war memorial because it separates fallen soldiers into two categories: “white” and “colored.”

Greenwood Mayor Welborn Adams was all set to replace the plaques during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration last month, but opponents threatened him with a 15-year-old law that brought down the Confederate flag down from atop the Statehouse.

The state law says law no historical monument may be altered without the approval of two-thirds of the state’s legislators.

Some African-American military historians say the monument should remain unchanged as a reminder of widespread segregation.
