SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Thousands of people around South Carolina participated in the 28th annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep on Saturday morning. It is the largest one-day litter cleanup of South Carolina’s beaches and waterways.
There were many cleanup locations around the Grand Strand including one in Surfside Beach and one in Pawleys Island.
Over 4,500 people participated in last year’s sweeps and more are expected this year.
“It really grows every year. I think people see the value and the need to keep their beaches clean because, you know, we all sit on the beach. We enjoy it and nobody wants to sit with, you know, debris around them,” said Surfside Beach Mayor, Bob Childs. The Town of Surfside Beach’s 2015 beach sweep had over 125 volunteers but around 200 were there this year.
The sweeps are organized by the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.
