Volunteer Horry Co. Schools football coach issued citation after referee was pushed, struck in face

A volunteer Horry County Schools football coach and a player pushed a referee during a game, the district says.

The incident happened on the field during a b-team football game between Whittemore Park Middle School and Aynor Middle School on November 5, according to Lisa Bourcier, with Horry County Schools. Towards the end of the game, an unpaid, volunteer football coach and player from Whittemore Park Middle School “pushed a referee after a call on the field.”

“The incident is under investigation and disciplinary actions are possible by HCS and the South Carolina High School League,” Bourcier said. “HCS hold our employees and coaches to the highest of moral standards, and we expect them to conduct themselves as role models for our students. We encourage a positive atmosphere set by coaches, officials, fans and other athletes while encouraging principles of good sportsmanship and enjoyment of competition.”

This game was the last game of the season.

Officers responded to Conway High School around 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 5 in reference to a possible assault, according to an incident report from the Conway Police Department. Officers spoke with the complainant and “it was determined that the victim was pushed and then struck in the face with an open hand.”

The victim, a 70-year-old man from the Galivants Ferry area, did not complain of any injuries, the report said. Joseph Mcarther Brantley, 50, of Conway, was issued a citation for assault in the third degree and released from the scene.
