Vigil planned, more info released about 5 nursing students who died in crash

As their classmates are trying to cope with an immeasurable loss, more is being learned about the 5 Georgia Southern nursing students who lost their lives in a multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday.

All of the 5 students who died along I-16 were on their way to their last day of training at a hospital in Savannah.

All of the young women were from Georgia and three of them were members of sororities.  One was the former president of her student body at a Christian high school.

On Thursday, florists put white roses, circled with a black ribbon, at the front of the school’s School of Nursing, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Fraternity brothers from Delta Tau Delta took red roses to a neighboring sorority to which one of the young woman belonged, the newspaper reported. The frat brothers planned to deliver roses to the other women’s sororities.

21-year-old Abbie Deloach was from Savannah and a graduate of Savannah Christian, where she served as student body president. She was a junior at GSU in the nursing program along with the rest of the students in the accident.

“Abbie loved her family, her friends, and her Lord. We will see her again,” her high school said in a statement.

20-year-old Morgan Bass was from Leesburg, Georgia and a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.

21-year-old Caitlyn Baggett of Millen Georgia was a Honor Graduate of Emanuel County Institute. She graduated in 2012.

21-year-old Catherine McKay Pittman was from Alpharetta Georgia and graduated in 2012 from Milton High School. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Chi Sorority.

20-year-old Emily Clark of Powder Springs Georgia graduated from Harrison High School in 2012 and was a cheerleader there. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

Our news partner WXIA spoke to friends of Clark who said she was excited about getting her white coat. They also said she was extremely close to her family.

Georgia Southern is holding a candlelight vigil in honor of the lost in Sweetheart Circle on the campus starting at 7 pm Thursday.

Savannah Christian Prep released this statement Wednesday evening regarding the death of Abbie Deloach who graduated in 2012:

“Today the Savannah Christian Prep family is grieving with all the families impacted by today’s tragedy on I-16. We mourn the loss of our own Abbie DeLoach, ‘12. We remember Abbie as being one of a kind: She was a leader and not a follower. As the high school student body president, she exemplified her faith and love for Christ. She was respected by both students and faculty as she displayed an incredible work ethic and passion in every area of her life. Abbie was a talented student athlete who excelled on both the volleyball and basketball courts; she was a dependable team member and friend through many hours of practices, games, and road trips. An individual who knew what she wanted from life, she worked diligently to achieve those goals. Her joy filled each and every hallway at SCPS, and she will be greatly missed. Our school joins together to pray with her parents, her sister, and the class of 2012, who will always remember their Abbie. While our grief is real, we are not without hope. Our faith in our Lord’s resurrection promises life eternal to all who believe in Him. Abbie loved her family, her friends, and her Lord. We will see her again.”
