CHURCH ROCK, NM – A suspected drunk driver drove through a fire truck barricade, crashed into a medical helicopter and then finally stopped when he ran into an ambulance.
“This is a very unique situation,” said McKinley County Sheriff Ron Silversmith. He said he and his deputies had never seen an accident like what they saw in the early morning hours of October 23.
“Fortunately, nobody was injured,” said Sheriff Silversmith. Navajo Nation Police had responded to a crash near Church Rock when Glenn Livingston came crashing through the road block, created by fire trucks.
After he crashed into the tail of the medical helicopter, oil spilled across the road.
“It’s a thankless job, and we’re out here trying to protect lives, and property and these are things that just happen,” said Silversmith.
Livingston was cuffed and taken to a well lit location for questioning.
“Wow, be careful not to fall,” said the McKinley County deputy while he escorted Livingston from one deputy’s unit to another. In the newly released dash-cam video from the Sheriff’s Office, Livingston had trouble walking.
“You’re not going to fight me right?” asked the officer. Livingston responded, “Ya.”
But when he was asked about the crash, this is what he said: “What happened Glenn?” Livingston responded, “What do you mean what happened?”
As the video continues, Livingston told the officer he and his girlfriend were just trying to have a good time. Livingston said the girlfriend was the one driving.
The officer than asked Livingston why witnesses saw him driving the Jeep that crashed into the emergency vehicles, but he insisted he wasn’t behind the wheel.
“It’s my Jeep, she was driving,” said Livingston.
Deputies said Livingston was alone in the SUV at the time of the crash. When he refused to take a field sobriety test, the handcuffs went back on.
Before putting Livingston in the car, he said, “Right now, your’e under arrest for DWI.”
