Video of lieutenant’s lip sync challenge goes viral

MARLBORO, SC (WBTW) – Several law enforcement agencies across the country are participating in a new social media craze, the lip syncing challenge, including the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.

A video of Lieutenant Trevor Murphy singing along to the song “Booed Up” is going viral. He posted it to his Facebook page during the weekend and has gotten more than 75,000 views and more than 2,000 shares so far. Lieutenant Murphy says some of the deputies encouraged him to make this video after seeing a similar one of police officers in Texas singing along to songs in their patrol cars. Lieutenant Murphy says it’s all about “humanizing the badge” and showing the community that police officers are just regular people.

“We’re not just cops who show up when bad things happen in the community. We’re also worship leaders. We’re little league coaches. We’re dads. We’re husbands. We’re neighbors. We’re just normal members of the community that provide a service and do a job we’re passionate about,” he said. He also told News13 he wanted to show his sense of humor and incorporated a donut in the video to “play on the stereotype of cops loving donuts.”

Lieutenant Murphy says the video has provided him the chance to interact with people of the community online and he is thinking of more ways to engage with them through social media.
