SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – Local, state and federal authorities are continuing to search for a man wanted in connection to a domestic incident that led to a high-speed chase and multiple shots fired at officers.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and Sumter Police Department, with assistance from the State Law Enforcement Division and the U.S. Marshals Service, are continuing to look for 25-year-old Dontrell Montese Carter, who led officers on a high-speed chase along U.S. 521 North before wrecking down an embankment early on Sept. 18, a release from the sheriff’s office says.

Carter is considered armed and dangerous and is believed to have connections in North Carolina, Homestead/Miami, Fla., Florence and Myrtle Beach, as well as Sumter.

As a Sumter police and Sumter County deputies responded, Carter exited his vehicle and fired shots from a semi-automatic rifle at officers before he escaped into the woods. There were no injuries.

Carter faces charges of domestic violence, failure to stop for a blue light and siren, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, seven counts of attempted murder, driving under suspension and firing shots into a dwelling, all from the Sept. 18 incident.

He also has charges from the Sumter Police Department that are pending including a 2008 armed robbery charge; unlawful carrying of a pistol and possession of a stolen firearm, both from 2010; an attempted murder charge as well as discharging a firearm into a vehicle both from 2013. A 2014 charge of grand larceny from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is also pending.

Carter has medium complexion, stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. When he was last seen, Carter had dreadlocks and a mustache, but he could have changed his appearance. He has no known scars or tattoos.

Anyone who sees Carter should not approach him but should immediately call 911.
