FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A homeless man charged for threatening women, one in a public bathroom, will now have to pay nearly five times the bond if he wants to get out of jail.
Brooklyn Smith III, 25, was arrested after he was charged with secret peeping and communicating threats, police say.
In court Monday a judge increased his bond from $6,500 to $30,000 because of what happened to Kelly Morton at a Food Lion grocery store in Fayetteville Friday night.
Morton says while she was using the bathroom there, he turned out the lights, crawled under the stall she was in, and threatened to kill her.
According to court documents, Smith told the woman in the stall “don’t move sweetie or I’ll (expletive) kill you.”
Morton remembers what happened next.
“At that time I kinda froze, didn’t know what to do, but I got up, he said ‘hold on we need to talk,’ I kinda shoved him out of the way, slammed the door, ran through the store yelling for help,” said Morton.
That same day, police say he gave a woman a note threatening to kill her at a Dairy Queen along Cliffdale Road, and told detectives he wanted to “rape a female” Friday night.
Concerned he would do the same thing again, prosecutors argued for the higher bond and mental health evaluation, but Morton wants more to be done.
“I’m not happy that he was not charged with attempted rape although he didn’t try, he made the statement that that was what he wanted to do, so by him entering the bathroom, he basically admitted, he was attempted to rape somebody,” said Morton.
Smith will be back in court February 21.
