BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Marlboro County investigators say a “very violent domestic violence situation” resulted in the death of a Bennettsville man early Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Fred Knight with Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office confirms that deputies are working with agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in the death investigation of David Tillman, 32, of Bennettsville. Deputies responded to a home on Highway 385 just before 7 a.m. Wednesday in reference to a shooting.

Deputies discovered Tillman had been shot and was deceased inside the home. A press release from the sheriff’s office confirms a domestic violence incident led to the shooting.

“The investigation shows so far that a very violent domestic violence situation occurred in the residence early [Wednesday] morning and was ongoing at the time of the shooting,” the release states.

Investigators have not released the name of the person they believe fired the gun, but they do confirm that the person behind the weapon was not involved in the domestic violence situation. No charges are filed at this time but the case remains under investigation, Sheriff Knight adds.

SLED crime scene is assisting the sheriff’s office and an autopsy will be performed at MUSC.
