CHERAW, SC – An 89 year old woman was asleep in her home when it caught on fire Sunday night. If not for two teenagers, that woman may not be here today.
As 17 year old Logan Campbell describes what happened Sunday night as he kicked down his neighbor’s front door to save her life, he can’t help to admit he was scared for his life.
“I was scared. I was just trying to get the door down to save her, that’s all I can do,” said Campbell.
Campbell and his step brother James Brown said they were outside when they heard a transformer blow. When they turned around, they saw their neighbor’s house in flames.
To Brown, 89 year old Pearl Mabry is no ordinary neighbor.
“I’ve known her my whole life, and she’s helped my grandma raise me. I’d do anything for her,” said Brown.
That includes running into a burning house to save her life.
As the boys look back on Mabry’s home, they say they made it just in time. If they had waited a minute longer, they may not have made it out alive. They say looking back to Sunday night, that was the furthest thing from their minds.
“It’s pretty great that we were able to save her in time. That’s all I was worried about was getting her out,” said Campbell.
Mabry was able to make it out with no injuries but she says it’s all because of her boys.
“They come to the door and come in and made sure I come out, and I didn’t even know I was coming out,” said Mabry.
The boys say they were just in the right place at the right time but for Mabry, the boys are her heroes.
