Two men trek through Myrtle Beach on 2,400 mile overdose awareness walk

Two men hiking all the way up the east coast to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic trekked through Myrtle Beach on Sunday.

Brett Bramble and  John Azerolo started the Overdose Awareness Walk at the end of January in Key West, Florida. They’ve walked for 71 days and approximately 1,000 miles. Their final destination is Fort Kent, Maine.

Not only are they trying to shed a spotlight on opioid addiction, they’re also raising money for Bramble’s non-profit, Freedom to Grow. He said the organization helps people struggling with addiction.

Bramble decided to start the walk in honor of his sister, who died of a heroin overdose in 2014.

“I couldn’t grasp that over a hundred families that same day went through the same thing that our family did. And then the next day and the day after that. Our feet get heavy, they’re hurting right now, my whole body is in pain, but I feel as light as a feather,” he said.

You can follow their journey on the Freedom to Grow website or Facebook page, where Bramble and Azerolo post pictures and live feeds.
