Two men were arrested and charged for shining deer in Horry County.
Officers with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources “arrested and charged two men in the Green Sea area of Horry County” around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a press release from SCDNR. “Officers observed 34-year-old Jeremy Randell Elliot and 44-year-old Michael Eldon Wallace drive into a field and shine deer.”
“Neither man could provide proof of permission to be on the property, and Elliot admitted to officers he wanted to count the points on a buck and see how close they could get to the animal,” states the release. “Officers also found eight grams of cocaine in the vehicle which was turned over to the Horry County Police Department.”
An investigation is ongoing.
According to an incident report from the Horry County Police Department, officers responded to the area of Fifteen Mile Bay Road and Cedar Drive in the Nichols area around 10:35 p.m. on Tuesday in reference to a drug call. Upon arriving, SCDNR notified HCPD officers that two suspects had been arrested and that open containers had been seen in the involved vehicle.
During a search of the vehicle, SCDNR officers found “a clear bag of green leafy substance in the center console and a clear bag of a white powdery substance in a separate compartment of the vehicle,” the report says. SCNDR officers then contacted the HCPD.
HCPD officers searched the vehicle and “located straws and other empty bags that show indications of the substance to be cocaine,” the report also says. “Neither of the suspects stated that the items were theirs.”
Both men were booked in to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center around 12:53 a.m. on Wednesday and remain in the center, according to booking records. Both are charged with using artificial light to observe or harass wildlife after 11 p.m. and public possession of open containers.
