A month-long cleanup project will continue to delay drivers using SC-544 in Horry County, according to the State Department of Transportation.
And, in the next few days, the traffic problems will get even worse as lane closures are planned as crews repair potholes.
Shannon Welch of the SC DOT said that the lane closures will be near CCU and will continue this week and through next Thursday, with a break over the weekend.
Already, there were serious traffic tie-ups on Wednesday, the first day of the pothole fixing, WBTW’s AJ Janavel observed.
The pothole repairs are part of a larger effort to clean up SC 544 by sweeping gutters and sidewalks.
In 1 week earlier this month, SCDOT’s website says more than 180,000 drivers used SC 544.
“Sand, gravel, debris, pine straw – whatever it may be, over time, it collects. It doesn’t look nice and presentable,” Welch said.
Welch says community complaints and comments fueled the project; however, he says it wasn’t always the state’s responsibility to put crews on the road to clean it up.
