Electric company workers are repairing some downed power lines, but the effort is blocking all lanes of SC 544 — and creating at least 4 wrecks and traffic jams all around Socastee even down to Holmestown Road at US 17 Bypass.
The initial incident happened around 3:45 pm Thursday at Glenmere Drive and Dick Pond Road, which is SC 544.
All lanes were blocked in the road mid-way between US 17 Bypass and SC 707.
Starting around 4:45 pm, many roads surrounding SC 544 were at a standstill because of re-routed traffic.
At 5:40 pm, an injury crash was reported at US 17 Bypass at Holmestown Road, which is beginning to back up because of the problems on SC 544.
Two crashes were reported on SC 707, including one in each way. And, a crash was also reported on SC 544 at the 17 Bypass.
Beach-bound traffic on SC 544 is backed up all the way to SC 31. West-bound traffic on SC 544 is backed up all the way to US 17 business.
Roads such as SC 707 and Big Block Road were also gridlock. It’s not clear what caused the power line problem.
