National Weather Service officials now say that a tornado with 75 mph winds hit near Lamar on Sunday, causing damage in the area.
According to the Darlington County Sheriff’s office there were numerous trees and power lines down across Darlington County.
Darlington County Sheriff’s Office as well as other agencies and volunteers responded to locations around Darlington County Sunday after several reports of damage from a tornado touching down.
Officials from the Wilmington office of the National Weather Service visited Lamar on Monday morning and said on Monday afternoon that a tornado was the cause of the damage.
The tornado was a EF-0 classification and hit around 6:34 pm and traveled about a half mile in the area.
Officials say some houses and barns sustained damage as well as numerous trees and power lines were blocking many roadways.
The National Weather Service said the tornado damaged 2 chicken houses and partially destroyed another chicken house off US Highway 401 near the intersection of Lynches River Road.
The tornado crossed Highway 401, knocking down numerous trees and lifted as it crossed West Lynches River Road.
A piece of sheet metal from a chicken house was found in a field off Hudson Street 1 3/4 miles away.
Officials encourage people who have to be out to drive with caution..
