GEORGETOWN — Tidelands Health and community leaders on Monday celebrated the opening of the health system’s new community resource center, an innovative facility that brings together medical care, social services and wellness programs under one roof to serve the area’s uninsured and under-insured residents.
Located at the corner of Highmarket and Wood streets in the former post office, the Tidelands Health Community Resource Center serves as headquarters for Tidelands Community Care Network, a public-private partnership of agencies and organizations dedicated to helping people access essential services, from affordable primary care to behavioral health services. It also houses a second location of Smith Medical Clinic, which provides free medical care to Georgetown County residents who don’t have insurance and can’t afford to pay for medical care.
Tidelands Health community health education nurses, community health workers, a transitional care team, a behavioral health specialist, intake coordinators and the Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments Assisted Rides Program are also located in the center. In addition, the 8,850-square-foot building, which has been totally renovated, includes space for community health education classes such as nutrition management and CPR and office and meeting space for Tidelands Community Care Network partners.
“The Tidelands Health Community Resource Center is a milestone for our community,” said H. McRoy Skipper Jr., CPA, chairman of the Tidelands Health board of trustees. “The work that will go on within these walls is a testament to the vision, the motivation and the spirit of a determined group of individuals who were unafraid to make bold decisions. It truly symbolizes what we at Tidelands Health mean when we say, ‘Better health begins here.’ ”
The $2.5 million needed to renovate the facility has been partly funded through a fundraising campaign led by the Tidelands Health Foundation. Fundraising efforts to support the project continue.—Information in the article above is from a submitted press release.
