FLORENCE, SC (WBTW)- Small hail fell Thursday across parts of the eastern Carolinas. The storm system that brought in the cool weather also triggered showers and thundershowers which included pea to marble sized hail. In some places the hail lasted long enough to cover the ground. WBTW Chief Meteorologist Frank Johnson says it was a cold “upper low” that was responsible for the hail.

“A bubble of cold air aloft has settled in over the Carolinas” says Frank. “Temperatures in the cloud layer are well below freezing, allowing hail to form and fall all the way to the ground without melting”.

Although unusual, Thursday’s hail is not considered “severe”. Severe hail must be at least one inch in diameter. Thursday’s hail was generally between ¼-1/2 of an inch.

The cool weather will stick around on Friday, and more showers are possible, some of them containing small hail.
