FLORENCE, S.C. (PRESS RELEASE) – Veronica Thomas, a M.Ed Instructional Technology graduate student at Coastal Carolina University of Conway, SC, has been chosen to participate in the International Scholar Laureate Program (ISLP) Delegation on International Relations & Diplomacy in South Africa. As a Golden Key International Honour Society member, she was chosen for this honor based on her exemplary academic performance and community engagement. Thomas was also awarded a scholarship from her honor society covering the cost of
tuition and trip expenses.
She will be joined by outstanding undergraduate and graduate students from across the United States and over 30 countries around the world for a cultural and educational enrichment journey. During the program, students are afforded
special access to embassy officials, local dignitaries and foreign policy experts, and will also take part in engaging activities and group discussions with peers. While experiencing the sights, sounds, people and places that make up this exotic and historic land, Thomas hopes to gain a new perspective as she contemplates her future and the role she will play as a global leader.
A native of Florence, Thomas will depart for South Africa at the end May and will study in Johannesburg and Durban before returning to the United States. “I count it a blessing to be granted this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is indeed an honor and privilege to serve as a delegate and I can’t wait to share my experiences as an educator,” the soon to be 29-year-old said. Thomas received a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with concentrations in English and Physics from
Francis Marion University in 2009 and is about to complete her seventh year of teaching mathematics. Her main focus of community engagement stems around the Wilson Teen Pearls, a girl empowerment student organization founded in 2013 at her high school alma mater. The organization’s focus is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic achievement through Leadership Development, Educational Enrichment with a S.T.E.A.M. focus, Civic Engagement, and Character Building within high school girls of all nationalities and ethnicities.
The International Scholar Laureate Program (ISLP) provides high-achieving students with the opportunity to take part in a learning experience designed to inform and enrich their career objectives and foster their ambition to achieve their lifelong goals in a way unlike any other. Attendees of the International Scholar Laureate Program are exceptional students from colleges and universities across the United States and abroad who demonstrate exemplary leadership while maintaining a dedicated interest in pursuing a career in one of the fields offered. With each session, scholars are able to compare and contrast what they see and learn with current methods and procedures in their home countries. As scholars travel throughout the host country, they discuss and debate leading issues while interacting with professionals in their field.
