RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Lindsay Hannan was helping out her sister and brother-in-law this weekend when she learned that thieves broke into their house.

Hannan’s sister and brother-in-law were at a Cincinnati, Ohio hospital with their 22-month-old daughter Elsa; the little girl was flown to the Ohio medical facility to be treated for Dravet’s syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes extreme seizures. However, the top notch medical facility in Ohio could not save Elsa’s life, she died Sunday morning.CLICK HERE for more photos

To help ease the pain of packing and cleaning the couple’s house on Pine Ridge Road, Lindsay Hannan went inside. She realized the place was a mess.

“At first I thought, oh my God, Graham (Elsa’s father) had a meltdown because stuff was thrown on the couches, and I totally understood because he had to say goodbye to his daughter, you know,” Hannan said. “It just kind of hit me like I think they just got robbed.”

Hannan said her sister and brother-in-law were in the process of getting renter’s insurance and right now the husband and wife are broke from mounting medical bills.

“They haven’t been able to even touch this year’s medical expenses along with now this,” she explained. “They have to start all over again with nothing, it’s just heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking.

“Oh yeah a lot of debt, a lot of debt, I mean we called her (Elsa) the million dollar baby because her medical bills from last year went up to about a million dollars and then her insurance kicked in — yeah it’s just insane.”
