COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Tests have revealed elevated levels of lead in water supplied by a private utility to three communities in suburban Columbia and Rock Hill.
The State newspaper reported that tests released Monday by Carolina Water Service showed high levels of lead in the drinking water of one subdivision in Lexington County and two in York County.
The newspaper reported that the lead corroded from pipes that serve homes in the three subdivisions. The amount of lead in water was up to four times above the federal standard.
Follow-up tests since Jan. 27 show that lead levels have fallen to within safe limits. Carolina Water Service was required to notify homeowners of its original findings and begin testing more frequently to make sure there are no more problems.
