AUSTIN (KXAN) — As she rehabbed from the injuries caused by 21 stab wounds, the victim of November’s sudden and random attack in Hyde Park thought perhaps whoever did that to her was walking around with a heavy conscience.

But an arrest warrant shows quite the opposite.

“I always thought she would walk around with guilt, but knowing she had this joy and this pride is very unsettling,” said the victim whose identity we are protecting.

An arrest warrant charging 18-year-old Pearl Moen with Attempted Murder details the possible pride and joy she took in attacking the victim as she sat on a sidewalk during the early morning hours. In a journal entry found in her bedroom, police said she was excited about stabbing an innocent woman to death and she received “a high unlike any other” from murder. She goes on to call herself a “homicidal psychopath with a deep hatred towards people.” The journal also had a drawing of a male and female lying in a blanket on the sidewalk according to police, exactly what the victim and a male friend were doing just prior to the attack.

The details were unsettling to the victim and made her only more relieved Moen is now in jail being held on a $1 million bond.

“Knowing this person could describe me this way and have no remorse was the hardest part for me,” she said.

The break in the case may have come thanks to the initiative of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association. In December, a group of volunteers helped distribute flyers across the neighborhood with the description of the suspect. The flyers proved crucial on Valentine’s Day when police said they responded to a family disturbance on Avenue C, just two blocks from where the attack happened on 44th and Speedway. During that call, police said a woman we now know as Moen’s mother told officers she was involved in a disturbance with her daughter and went on to say Moen matched the description they saw on flyers, had a collection of knives, and had joked about the stabbing. The journal entry was found in the investigation that followed. In an interview with Moen’s boyfriend, police said he stated Moen made comments about killing someone in November.

Police said Moen also wrote in her journal about losing a gold ring during the attack. A gold ring was found at the crime scene.

“The flyers really were critical,” said the victim’s father. As the weeks and months went by, the victim stayed in touch with Austin Police detectives. While talking to KXAN Tuesday, she and her father were very appreciative and thankful for the work of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association and Austin Police Department.

KXAN attempted to talk to Moen’s mother on Tuesday. She declined to speak about her daughter, only expressing sorrow for the victim who was hurt. Ironically, the victim and her father empathize with her.

“I am very sorry for what she is going through,” said the father. “It is not easy to see your child in that situation.”

“It means a lot,” said the victim. “Because there was no remorse in the situation.”

Moen’s criminal history includes an arrest in 2015 during a misdemeanor family violence assault. She received probation for the crime.

Pearl Moen’s diary entry:

“So, okay I’ll start with the exciting bit. I stabbed an innocent woman to death earlier today (well yesterday since it’s 1 a.m.)…It was absolutely fantastic. Murder gives me a high unlike any other, it feels like this crisp unreality, flashing and sparkling, adrenaline and shock. Fight or flight mode. How do I even go about describing it. The whole thing was unreal. I’m so proud of myself. I stabbed her like 20 times. Maybe more…She screamed and grabbed at me, saying ‘What the [expletive]?! Help! Leave!’ For now I should explain why. Other than the fact that I’m a homicidal psychopath. I have a deep hatred towards people right now..Yesterday I lost my other gold ring I’ve worn all my life on a chain around my neck as it was ripped off by a girl I was murdering. Fate is weird.”

Moen is currently being held on a $1,000,000 bond in the Travis County Jail, she was booked Feb. 28.
