COLUMBIA, SC – Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott stated that on Monday Richland County Deputies detained a 17-year-old male student for plotting to do harm to others.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Richland County School District One officials contacted law enforcement in reference to a student plotting to shoot students and faculty at Dreher High School on Monday, April 20, 2015 on the 16th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre.
The Sheriff stated that the student attended Heyward Career Center and was questioned about his intentions, investigators were able to find material related to the tragedy at Columbine on the students social media site to include his intent to do harm.
The Sheriff stated that the student had been planning this since January of 2015. The student was turned over to the City of Columbia Police Department, who in turn had the student committed for evaluation.

Sheriff Leon Lott stated that this incident truly shows the importance of the Sheriff’s Department’s School Resource Officers, their quick response, and action stopped a tragic event and saved many lives. The Sheriff stated that this investigation is ongoing.
