SANFORD, N.C. – Seventeen-year-old Tobias McLean has been missing since his mother and his sister were found dead in a Sanford apartment fire.
The burned bodies of Calandra McLean, 42, and Tashonna Cameron, 13, were found inside an apartment located at 916 Clark Circle Monday afternoon.
Sanford firefighters went to the apartment complex in response to a call regarding a strong odor of gas. Upon arrival, fire officials noticed smoke coming from an apartment nearby. McLean and Cameron were found inside that apartment.CLICK HERE for more photos
Police are now looking for Billy Jo McLean, 54. Police have charged him with two counts of first-degree murder. He was last seen driving a 2001 Ford Windstar van.
The family says Calandra McLean’s 17-year-old son Tobias McLean is missing and they believe he may be with Billy Jo McLean.
“He has not been found, please call the police if you see this teenage boy,” said Joann Jackson, Tobias McLean’s grandmother.
Friends say Billy Jo McLean and Calandra McLean had been married for five years, and on the outside it looked like a happy marriage. Alexander Brower took photos at their wedding and saw them at another wedding this past weekend.
“They looked to be doing so well and all of the other people in the community that you hear talking about them would say the same thing,” said Brower.
While friends and family can’t wrap their minds around why something like this happened, they’re choosing instead to focus on the positive — by remembering and honoring a smart, beautiful teenage girl and a woman who, they say, was a beautiful mother.
“She set a good example for most parents that are out here,” said one neighbor. “To train your kids upright, get them in church and live for the Lord.”
A neighbor at the apartment complex didn’t want to speak on camera, but she told WNCN that she knew Tashonna Cameron well and said she was a sweet girl and that the loss is devastating.
More than 50 people came out Tuesday to honor the two victims of the fire.
Marlene Jefferies said she served as pastor to the victims and was a close friend of Calandra McLean.
“I know they’re in heaven, celebrating, and I’m going to celebrate on earth on their behalf,” she said.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Billy Jo McLean is urged to contact the Sanford Police Department at 919-777-1051.
