SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – A man is dead and a 16-year-old boy is under arrest after a shooting outside a home in Boiling Springs early Monday morning.
The Spartanburg County Coroner says the victim is 60-year-old George Kevin Rush.
Clayton William Jones, 16, of Willow Run Terrace in Spartanburg is charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime, and Malicious Injury to Property.
The shooting happened on Willow Run Terrace just after 6 a.m. Monday.
The addresses of the suspect and victim show they are neighbors.
Since he is 16-years-old, Jones is charged as an adult due to the severity of the offenses, but by law, he still must be kept sight and sound separate from the adult population at the detention facility, according to the sheriff’s office.
They say he will probably be transferred to a Department of Juvenile Justice detention facility.
Jones had a bond arraignment before a magistrate judge earlier today, who deferred the setting of his bond to a circuit court judge at a later date.
Officials with the North Spartanburg Fire Department said Rush was a fire commissioner for the department.
Deputies say they are trying to figure out a motive for the shooting.
Deputies said the Jones kicked out the window of a sheriff’s office cruiser.
Investigators believe the teen acted alone and they are not searching for other suspects.
Assistant Fire Chief Brent Lewis with the North Spartanburg Fire Department released the following statement on the death of Rush:
George has been a commissioner with the department since 2007, he served as a volunteer firefighter prior to that for several years. George has been an advocate for both the fire department and the community he has served. He continued to be active while working his fulltime job at Synthomer Polymers and working part time as a security guard. George was quiet, thoughtful, and always willing to help anyone in need. We ask for prayers for the family in this tragic time. In addition to the family, we also ask for prayers for the family of the alleged teenager shooter. This is a tough time for everyone.
An autopsy is now planned for Rush.
