CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Prosecutors wrapped up their case in the death penalty trial of Dylann Roof with the tearful 911 call made by a survivor he intentionally left behind.
Polly Sheppard was on the stand for 40 minutes Wednesday. She spent half of her testimony recalling each of the nine people killed on June 17, 2015, at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.
She also spoke about the minutes of terror after Roof stood up, as the victims closed their eyes for a prayer to end Bible study, and started firing nearly 80 shots.
Sheppard also recounted how Roof told her to shut up as she prayed aloud and that he would leave her alive to tell people he attacked the historic African-American church because he hated black people.
