HOUSTON, TX  — A former Texas middle school English teacher who became pregnant by a student pleaded guilty to a lesser charge Wednesday morning, NBC affiliate KPRC-TV reports.

Alexandria Vera, 24, was accused of having a lengthy sexual relationship with a Stovall Middle School student. She became pregnant by the teen and later had an abortion when she was questioned about the relationship, according to court records.

Vera admitted to having a sexual relationship with the 13-year-old student since last September. She told police she first met the student during a summer school session. The relationship quickly turned physical.

Investigators say the boy’s parents not only knew about the relationship, but they also approved of it. They even would allow the teen to sleep at Vera’s home where they engaged in sex “on almost a daily basis,” court documents state.

Vera said she got pregnant with the student’s baby in January. She told the officer that the student’s family knew about the pregnancy and were supportive and excited about the baby, prosecutors said. Vera later had an abortion because she got nervous when Child Protective Services showed up at school to question her and the student about their relationship, the court documents state.

Vera was originally charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, but she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child. The new charge lowers her maximum sentence from 25 years to five years. It also means she could be released on probation.
