Jim Dumm, the Executive Director of Tara Hall Home for Boys, joined News13 NOW at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Dumm shared details about Paddle Fest – the home’s biggest annual fundraiser that allows people access to paddle down the beautiful Mingo Creek.

…a 4-mile trek down Black Mingo Creek in kayaks, canoes and on paddle boards. Upon arrival to the shores of Tara Hall’s campus, join hundreds of others for outdoor activities, live music from local bands, food and more. Kids’ activities include afternoon kayak races (older kids) and barrel races (younger kids). Paddlers and non-paddlers welcome.
Tara Hall is a residential home for boys that houses and educates boys who have come from various challenging situations. South Carolina boys who are neglected, troubled or abused – ages 6 and up – find a supportive and safe environment at Tara Hall in Georgetown County.
For the 50th anniversary of Tara Hall, there will be a Friday night event as well. At 7 p.m. on April 26th, recording artist, speaker and author Jimmy Wayne will host the event in which he’ll perform and speak about his book that touches on some themes that mirror the lives of many Tara Hall boys. Kayaks, canoes, paddle boards… and a concert?
A community tradition is back with Tara Hall’s 8th Annual Paddle Fest on Saturday, April 27, 2019 in Georgetown, SC. This year the festival is part of a two-day celebration for Tara Hall’s 50th Anniversary. There will also be a free event – ‘Concert for the Community: Jimmy Wayne LIVE’ – the evening before Paddle Fest in Pawleys Island, SC. The concert is a thank you gift from Tara Hall to the community for 50 years of support. The general public is invited to attend one or both family-friendly events.
Tara Hall’s Annual Paddle Fest starts with hundreds of paddlers venturing out on Black Mingo Creek on Saturday morning. They navigate a scenic four-mile route to the shores of Tara Hall Home for Boys and join hundreds of other festival attendees for outdoor activities, live music from local bands, lunch and more. Kids’ activities include face painting and afternoon kayak and barrel races.
As part of this year’s 50th Anniversary celebration, Jimmy Wayne, award-winning music artist, best-selling author and inspirational speaker, will be paddling with the Tara Hall boys and spending some time at the event.
Jimmy Wayne is known for hit songs such as “Stay Gone,” “Paper Angels,” “I Love You This Much” and “Do You Believe Me Now.” However, as a former foster child, he is also known for walking halfway across the country to raise awareness for kids aging out of foster care and for getting legislation passed in several states extending the age of foster care. His memoir Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way is a three-time New York Times best-seller. The general public is invited to begin the celebration the night before Paddle Fest at a “Live Event for the Community: Jimmy Wayne LIVE.” Enjoy a mix of hit songs and personal stories from this renowned recording artist on Friday, April 26 at 7pm at Pawleys Island Community Church. Jimmy Wayne will be on hand to sign copies of his best-selling book which will be available for purchase at the show. The event is free to attend and there will be an opportunity to make a donation. 100% of gifts received will go to Tara Hall Home for Boys.
Tara Hall is a nationally accredited, long-term residential home and school that accepts neglected, troubled and abused boys. Their mission is to help boys develop moral, social, educational and life skills, thus building responsible contributing adults, while also providing services to their families. Tara Hall has been a fixture in the community for 50 years and has helped more than 700 boys who have passed through their doors.
