Horry County leaders are utilizing technology in their continued efforts to tackle litter problems.

Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee Chair Bo Ives says a free mobile app will make it easier for residents to report litter issues and illegal dumping.

“if you see litter, we have the trash tracker app. it’s statewide that’s being adopted.”

PalmettoPride created the Trash Tracker app, its a location based service that uses GPS to let users report information on the exact location and time of day in real time.

“Unfortunately we’re a throw away society and when we’re throwing it ,we’re not showing a lot of care of where it ends up,” says Ives.

That’s why the Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee teamed up with environmental artists to place metal sculptures around the county. After installation they are packed with recycled materials found on cleanups

The latest was a fish sculpture dedicated on Saturday as part of a clean up at Enterprise Boat Landing. According to Ives, ” it gets the message across to put trash in the right place and strikes the right note.”

April is zero tolerance month for litter, so police are writing up tickets for infractions. The fine for littering can be up to $1,000.

The Trash Tracker app is available now, you can download it to your mobile device at the itunes app store or Google play.
