SOCIETY HILL, SC (WBTW) – Law enforcement officials say they were looking for a man after a car chase that started in North Carolina earlier Friday.

According to Lt. Robert Kilgo with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, officials were searching for 20-year-old Ronald Wittig of Peachland in the area of the Society Hill Boat Landing where he ran into a wooded area.

Officials say he was captured around 6 p.m. on Williamson Street.

Wittig was wanted on multiple felonies out of Richmond County, North Carolina.

Lt. Kilgo says the manhunt began after a vehicle pursuit that started in North Carolina and came into Darlington County.

The pursuit began in Rockingham in Richmond County, then crossed over into Marlboro County where Bennettsville police picked up the chase that eventually brought them into Darlington County where the Darlington County Sheriff’s got involved.

According to a press release, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office Aviation unit and K9 unit, Lake City police, Society Hill police, and the SC Department of Natural Resources also helped find Wittig.

A post from the Bennettsville Police Department says a handgun and possible narcotics were found in the vehicle. Wittig is in custody for failure to stop for blue lights along with other charges out of Richmond County.

This investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
