Suspect in custody after shooting at Conway motel left one person injured

CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Conway police responded to a shooting on Church Street Tuesday afternoon, according to city spokesperson Taylor Newell.

Newell says the call came in around 12:30 p.m. for shots fired at the Econo Lodge, located at 1101 Church Street Hwy 501. Newell says the shooting occurred inside a motel room. One person was shot and is being transported to the hospital.

The suspected shooter ran from the motel on foot toward 16th Avenue, Newell says. Police found the suspect, 49-year-old James Howard Parker, of Conway, and took him into custody around 3 p.m. Parker is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by certain persons.

Whittemore Park Middle School was on lockdown briefly, as a safety precaution, confirms Newell. Horry County Schools spokesperson Lisa Bourcier says students were released around the time of the shooting as they were scheduled for a half-day.

More information will be released as it is received from Conway officials.
