CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW)- Conway Police charged a man after a shooting near Coastal Carolina University.
Lt. Selena Small with the Conway Police Department says officers were called around 3:25 Monday afternoon to Cove Apartments on Highway 544 after reports of a shooting.
Officers found the victim shot outside the apartments. He died on the scene.
Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden identified the victim as 20-year-old Cameron James Culp. He was from Detroit, Michigan.
An alert sent by Coastal Carolina University asked all students, faculty, and staff to stay wherever they are on campus after the shooting.
Lt. Small says three men of interest were taken into police custody, and all three men were found near the Cove complex. According to Lt. Small, two of the three men were released, while the other remains in custody.
Conway Police charged 20-year-old Jarvis Malik with possession of firearm by certain person, unlawful carrying of pistol, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana with close proximity to school.
Martha Hunn, the associated vice president for university communication for CCU, told News13 none of the suspects, or the victim, was a student at CCU.
According to the Conway Police Department, there is no longer any danger.
School leaders lifted the lockdown around 5:30 Monday night.
Horry County Fire Rescue, Horry County Police Department, and the Conway Police Department are on the scene.
Police say there are major traffic backups along 544, and to avoid the area if possible.
An email from CCU’s Provost and Executive Vice President, Dr. J. Ralph Byington, acknowledges that students may have missed 4 p.m. exams due to the alert telling students to stay inside.
